Biography

Christine Wiersema is a Dutch sculptor and visual artist based in Bordeaux, France. Working primarily in bronze, her practice explores the human figure through symbolism, psychology, and themes of transformation.

Early Formative Years

Christine grew up in a family shaped by the aftermath of war and displacement, where much remained unspoken. This environment sparked an early fascination with emotion, mystery, and the hidden layers beneath everyday life. After leaving home at a young age, she moved to Amsterdam, where she discovered visual art through painting—developing a strong sensitivity for colour, atmosphere, and composition.

Alongside her early artistic practice, Christine trained and worked for many years in psychiatric care as a nurse and sociotherapist. This experience profoundly shaped her understanding of the human psyche. She learned to look beyond outer behaviour, recognizing the deeper emotional layers, trauma, and vulnerability beneath what is visible.

The Confluence of Form and Symbolism

While studying drawing and art education at HogeSchool Holland, Christine encountered the tarot through studies in colour theory, astrology, and symbolism. The imagery resonated instantly with her intuitive, visual way of perceiving the world, awakening a lifelong fascination.

A move to Rotterdam brought a shift in medium. While raising her two children in a highly creative home environment, Christine attended a sculpture course. Creating her first clay portrait opened an entirely new artistic direction. Working with clay and wax became a deeply meditative process. Over time, she transitioned fully from oil painting to sculpture.

A Deepening Practice

As her sculptural language grew, Christine found herself missing the deep psychological reflection that had defined her years in psychiatric care. This longing for analytical depth led her back to an extensive study of tarot, astrology, numerology, and chirology. Rather than approaching tarot as a tool for prediction, she explored it as a psychological mirror. For many years, she worked professionally as a tarot practitioner and teacher in the Netherlands.

In 2008, Christine and her family took a bold new step, relocating to southwestern France after purchasing Château de Lamothe. Over the next eleven years, she oversaw the château’s extensive renovation and artistic development, running a successful chambres d’hôtes, teaching sculpture, and managing a gallery from her home studio. During this period, her work was exhibited internationally. In 2021, her craftsmanship was recognized globally when she was accepted into the prestigious Sculptors Guild in New York.

Inner Voice

Now working from her independent studio in Bordeaux, Christine has channeled her life’s work into Inner Voice. This major sculptural series translates the twenty-two Major Arcana cards of the tarot into elongated bronze figures. They are not literal illustrations, but powerful symbolic presences that give physical, enduring form to the inner human experience.

Exhibitions

Christine began exhibiting her work in the early 1980s, initially working with oil paintings and developing a visual language ranging from magical realism towards surrealism. Over the years her artistic practice evolved towards sculpture and bronze, resulting in exhibitions throughout the Netherlands and internationally.
